Chapter Eight – Charmita

December 8, 2021…

I was glad that Shawn had offered to take Aria and I to see the lights at the zoo two nights ago. My baby girl really enjoyed herself, especially when she got to see Santa. I couldn’t believe that she had asked him if he could bring her dad home. Of course, he said yes, so she was excited as ever about that. I just hoped that her wish came true.

I was happy that me and Tracee had actually gotten along that night. I was expecting to have to put hands on her again, so her behavior really surprised me. I wasn’t sure if her attitude would extend past our outing, so I made sure I soaked in all of her newfound positivity. I didn’t know what her issue was with me, but what I did know was that I was tired of arguing with Tracee. I had a child and a man to focus on, but most importantly, I was too old to still be going through childish shit with people.

Today was visitation with Tato and as always, I was looking forward to seeing him. But with only 17 days left until Christmas, I didn’t know what kind of mood he would be in. Our calls had gotten better than they previously were, but he was still saddened that things weren’t moving as quickly as he’d like them to. What mattered most though was that we were finally back to getting along. I just prayed that we didn’t have any arguments now that we would be face to face again.

I parked my car, put my cell in the console and tucked my purse under the front seat. I then grabbed my face mask, got out of the car, locked the doors, and headed inside. After going through the usual pat down, I was finally escorted to the visitation area. A couple of minutes later, they were escorted out. Tato had a huge smile on his face, so I guess that meant he was in a good mood, at least I hoped he was.

“Hey babe,” he greeted as he picked up the phone and held it to his ear.

“Hey,” I said as I adjusted the phone in my hand. “Looks like you’re doing better.”

“I’m cool,” he said. “Just ready to come home.”

“I know,” I replied. “You look good.”

“Not as good as you,” he said smiling. “How you been?”

“I’ve been okay,” I said. “Just taking things a day at a time.”

“That’s all we can do,” Tato replied. “What y’all been up to though? How’s Aria doing?”

“She’s doing good actually, much better than before. But not a day goes by that she doesn’t ask about you,” I admitted. “Shawn dropped by the other night and took us to see the lights at the zoo. She really enjoyed that.”

“Oh yeah,” Tato said. “I hit him up and asked him to do that for me since I know how much she loves lights, so I’m glad she enjoyed herself.”

“Well, thank you for doing that ‘cause she had a blast and so did I.
